The common causes — a quick checklist
- No structured data: engines can’t confidently identify what your business is or offers.
- Thin or indirect content: your pages sell, but don’t answer the specific questions people ask AI.
- Inconsistent business information: name, address, or phone differ across your site, Google Business Profile, and directories.
- Weak reputation signals: few, old, or missing reviews and third-party mentions.
- Blocked crawlers: your site (knowingly or not) prevents AI crawlers from reading it.
- No third-party footprint: the sources engines cite (directories, communities, listicles) don’t mention you.
How to diagnose it
Ask the questions your customers ask directly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, and note who gets cited. If competitors and directories appear but you don’t, the gap is almost always one or more of the causes above.
From there, fix the foundations in order: technical (schema, crawler access), then content (answer pages), then off-site (directories, reviews, community presence).

I rank on Google — why am I still missing from AI answers?
Ranking for links and being cited in a generated answer are different. AI engines favor content they can extract a clear, verifiable answer from, backed by consistent business information. You can rank yet still lack the structure engines need to cite you.
Could my site be blocking AI crawlers without me knowing?
Yes. Some sites and plugins block crawlers like GPTBot or PerplexityBot by default. Checking and correcting crawler access is part of the foundational work.
